Paint exactly where you want changes, describe what you want, and let AI transform specific areas of your product photography. Master mask-based editing for professional results.
This guide is part of our AI Studio tool series:
Sometimes you need surgical precision in image editing. Maybe there's a reflection you need to remove. A fabric swatch you want to replace with something specific. A background element that's distracting from your product. You know exactly where the problem is—you just need powerful tools to fix it.
Edit Specific Area gives you that control. Paint over exactly what you want to change, describe the result you're after, and let AI handle the execution.
Edit Specific Area combines two powerful capabilities: precise spatial control through masking, and intelligent content generation through AI. You paint a mask to define where changes should happen. You write a prompt to describe what those changes should be. The AI synthesizes these inputs to modify only the masked region while preserving everything else.
This is inpainting taken to its professional conclusion—the same underlying technology that powers high-end retouching, now accessible through an intuitive interface.
Remove or replace specific elements:
When Fabric Swap's broader approach isn't right, Edit Specific Area lets you change precisely defined areas:
Change characteristics of specific objects:
Address background issues without affecting the product:
Select the photograph you want to edit. The interface displays it at full resolution for precise masking.
Use the brush tools to define the edit area:
Brush Tool: Paint to add to your mask. Masked areas appear as an overlay, showing exactly what will be edited.
Eraser Tool: Remove areas from your mask. Perfect for cleaning up edges or correcting mistakes.
Brush Size Slider: Adjust from fine detail (4px) to broad strokes (256px). Use smaller sizes for precise edges, larger for filling in areas.
Clear Button: Reset your mask entirely and start fresh.
Overlay Toggle: Show or hide the mask overlay. Useful for checking your work against the original image.
In the prompt field, explain what you want to appear in the masked area:
Good prompts are specific:
Avoid vague prompts:
Click the Image button to attach a reference:
The AI uses reference images to guide its interpretation of your prompt.
Output Size: Choose appropriate dimensions
Number of Images: Generate multiple variations to select from
Assist Mode: Enable to let AI enhance your prompt for better results
Click Generate and review results. Each variation interprets your prompt slightly differently—select the best match.
Under "Advanced," fine-tune generation:
Include the full area you want to change, but follow edges carefully:
Take your time with the mask—it's the foundation of your edit.
Help the AI understand what surrounds your edit:
Instead of: "Blue fabric" Try: "Navy blue velvet upholstery matching the adjacent cushion, with similar lighting and shadow patterns"
Context produces coherent results.
When you need to match something specific:
Text descriptions are interpreted; reference images are matched.
Request 3-5 outputs for any significant edit:
Edit Specific Area supports iterative refinement:
Each iteration can address specific remaining issues.
Your dresser photography shows brass hardware, but you want to present a nickel option. Carefully mask each drawer pull. Prompt: "Brushed nickel hardware with satin finish." Generate and review—all hardware updated consistently.
There's a visible electrical outlet behind your floor lamp. Mask the outlet and surrounding wall area. Prompt: "Clean white painted wall with subtle natural texture." The outlet disappears into seamless wall.
The cushion on your accent chair appears slightly wrinkled in the shot. Mask the wrinkled area. Prompt: "Smooth linen cushion surface with clean seams and natural drape." The AI smooths the wrinkle while maintaining material authenticity.
A client sent a fabric swatch for their COM order. Upload the swatch as a reference, mask your chair's upholstery area, and generate a visualization of their specific material on your product.
Toggle Quality vs. Fast mode:
Start in Fast mode to develop your approach, then generate final selections in Quality mode.
Edit Specific Area uses credits based on output size and number of variations. The estimated cost displays before generation. For targeted edits that would otherwise require reshooting or extensive manual retouching, this represents significant time and cost savings.
