From Range Planning to Retailer-Ready Content: A Manufacturer Workflow

The seven steps between approving a furniture range and having accurate product content ready for a retailer to accept.

From Range Planning to Retailer-Ready Content: A Manufacturer Workflow

A range-planning meeting might finish with 12 new pieces, six fabrics and a spring launch date. That is a commercial decision. It is not yet retailer-ready content.

Before a retailer can list the range, those choices have to become sellable variants with accurate specifications, imagery and channel data. The cleanest workflow has seven steps.

1. Define what will actually be sold

Start with the approved combinations, not the theoretical options.

List each frame, size, fabric, finish and orientation that will be orderable. Decide which differences create a separate variant and assign a stable internal SKU. Record the retailers and markets included in the launch.

This prevents marketing from producing assets for an option that never reaches production and stops ecommerce from inventing variant structure at the upload stage.

2. Turn manufacturing specifications into product records

A workshop or engineering sheet contains information needed to make the product. A retailer record needs the facts required to identify, describe, deliver and sell it.

Map shared facts to the parent product and differences to the relevant variants. Include packaging information where the destination needs it. Record the source and owner for important facts so a late correction has somewhere to go.

3. Create the material and asset plan

Count the assets against the sellable range.

Which variants need a distinct hero image? Which fabrics need swatches? Which products need a dimension diagram, detail image or lifestyle scene? What sizes and aspect ratios do the named retailers require?

Before batch generation, confirm that the selected combinations are valid and use approved product and material references. Furniture Connect can generate images across selected products and linked materials in a batch. The outputs are tagged by product, material and angle. Human approval before publication still applies. Saving a checked image to a named catalog variant requires user authorization; if the user has already explicitly requested that save, the Agent does not ask again.

4. Complete the product content

Write the base titles, descriptions, features and care information from the approved product facts.

Do not begin by filling ten retailer templates. Establish the reusable source first. Prepare destination mappings and draft versions alongside it, but release each submission only when its required facts and assets are approved. If a retailer needs different copy or a market needs another language, keep that value separate from the base.

5. Check the range against the retailer

"Complete" only makes sense in relation to a destination.

Check required fields, variant structure, imagery, commercial information and supporting documents against the retailer's current specification. For example, Nebraska Furniture Mart's published vendor guide requests dimensional information in crated and uncrated form.

Record blockers by product and variant. "Almost ready" is not useful if the missing field appears on every SKU.

6. Prepare and review the submission

Map the approved records into the retailer's columns, naming rules and asset slots. Review the mapping before submitting.

Furniture Connect's CSV importer suggests incoming header mappings for review. That is separate from mapping an outgoing submission to a retailer's template. Neither a suggested import mapping nor a prepared export establishes that the product facts are correct or that the retailer will accept the file.

7. Confirm what went live

Submission is not the final step.

Check what the retailer accepted, rejected and published. Look at variant grouping, image choice, price and availability on the live surface. Route corrections back to the appropriate source: the product, variant or material record for factual changes, or the relevant channel value or mapping for destination-specific corrections. Do not patch the retailer copy alone.

Who owns each step?

Product normally owns the approved range and specifications. Marketing owns customer-facing copy and visual direction. Operations or a product-content function maintains the structured record. Ecommerce or commercial teams own retailer requirements and submission.

The handoffs matter more than the department names. Each step needs one accountable owner, one input and a clear definition of done.

For the wider process through change and retirement, see the manufacturer product-content operating guide.
