What Furniture Manufacturers Need for a Digital Product Passport

Furniture-specific DPP fields are not final. Learn what ESPR can require, what the current study proposes and how manufacturers can prepare their data.

What Furniture Manufacturers Need for a Digital Product Passport

The final Digital Product Passport fields for furniture have not been decided.

They will be set by the furniture-specific rules targeted indicatively for adoption in 2028.[1] ESPR already defines the types of information a delegated act can require, while the current furniture study is assessing how those requirements could apply to this category.[2][3]

Manufacturers should prepare the underlying records without presenting a draft field list as settled law.

If you need the dates first, read when the EU Digital Product Passport may apply to furniture.

The information ESPR can require

The DPP framework covers several groups of information. The furniture delegated act will decide which elements apply and at what level.

Product identity

This can include a unique product identifier, relevant commodity codes and other identifiers selected by the delegated act.[2]

Do not assume every furniture passport will use a GTIN, or that every field will apply at individual-item level. The rules may choose a model, batch or item level depending on the information.

Economic operators and facilities

The passport can identify the manufacturer and other relevant economic operators, with operator or facility identifiers where required.[2]

For imported goods, the final obligations need to be read alongside the roles assigned by ESPR and the furniture-specific act. Avoid reducing this to one generic "EU responsible operator" field before those details are fixed.

Compliance and instructions

Possible content includes declarations of conformity, technical documentation, certificates, instructions, warnings and safety information.[2]

The record needs to show what the document covers. A test report for one fabric, supplier or production batch should not be presented as proof for every variant in the range.

Durability, repair and end of life

ESPR allows product rules to require information about installation, maintenance, repair, spare parts, durability, disassembly and recycling.[3]

The furniture study is considering the practical content, but its current material remains preparatory rather than final law.[4]

Substances of concern

ESPR can require the substance name, location, concentration and information for safe use or end-of-life treatment.[3]

The rule that prevents an exemption above 0.1% by weight applies to the specific Article 2(27)(a) category referenced by Article 7(6)(b). It should not be rewritten as though every substance described anywhere as a "substance of concern" automatically follows the same threshold.[2][3]

Why furniture makes the data relationship difficult

One chair can use different fabrics from different mills. A finish may change the care instructions. A supplier declaration may cover one production period but not the next.

That means the answer may not live only on the parent product. Some information belongs to the variant, material, supplier or batch. The current furniture assessment highlights the work of mapping and linking information that already exists.[4]

For a catalog team, the practical question is: which exact sellable item does this fact or document describe?

Where the information tends to sit today

The data is often present but disconnected:

  • Material composition in a mill specification.
  • Care instructions in a PDF on a shared drive.
  • Test reports filed by supplier or date.
  • Spare-part references in an after-sales spreadsheet.
  • GTINs in the ERP or packaging artwork.
  • Assembly instructions attached to a parent product even though one configuration differs.

The first job is not to buy a passport platform. It is to discover which information exists, who owns it and where the relationship to the product has been lost.

A sensible preparation exercise

Choose one furniture product sold into the EU and create a mock evidence pack.

List its identifiers, materials, relevant suppliers, care and assembly instructions, repair or spare-part information and compliance documents. Note the level each item covers: product, variant, material, batch or individual item.

Do not fill gaps with generated compliance claims. Record the missing evidence and send it to the person or supplier able to verify it.

This exercise helps even if the final passport requirements change. It gives retailer, ecommerce, sales and service teams a clearer route to the same approved product information.

Furniture Connect's role

Furniture Connect does not currently issue Digital Product Passports, create compliant data carriers or register products with the EU.

The catalog can maintain some of the underlying product, variant, material and asset data. That may reduce the amount of evidence trapped in disconnected files, but it does not turn AI-filled content into compliance evidence. Any regulatory fact or document still needs an accountable human review.
