How ChatGPT and Claude Connect to a Furniture Product Catalog Using MCP
MCP lets an AI assistant work with live catalog records. Learn how the connection works, what it can change and what the furniture data must contain.

A sales rep asks whether a three-seater is available in performance velvet and what its depth is. An assistant can answer from the live catalog instead of a spreadsheet attachment, but only when it has a secure way to reach the catalog and the right version of the product is recorded there.
The Model Context Protocol, or MCP, provides that connection. It lets ChatGPT, Claude and other compatible clients use a defined set of tools exposed by the catalog platform.[1]
What an MCP connection actually changes
Without a connection, the assistant works from what you paste into the conversation, upload as a file or make public on the web.
With MCP, the assistant can ask the catalog system for the current record. Depending on the tools and permissions provided, it may be able to search products, inspect variants, read material details, update a field or build a quote.
That does not give the assistant unrestricted access. The server defines the available tools; the user's authentication, workspace permissions and feature entitlements define what can be reached. The external assistant may add its own approval prompts.
Tools, resources and saved prompts
MCP servers can expose three kinds of capability:[2]
- Tools perform an action, such as finding a product or updating an attribute.
- Resources provide context the assistant can read.
- Prompts provide reusable instructions for a task.
The important distinction is between reading and writing. A salesperson checking dimensions needs read access. A catalog manager asking the assistant to correct 300 color names needs write access and a way to review the result.
Connecting Claude
Claude supports remote MCP servers through custom connectors. Availability and setup depend on the Claude plan and, for managed workspaces, administrator policies. The user adds or is given the connector, signs in and authorizes access.[3]
Furniture Connect uses account authorization, so Claude acts within the connected user's workspace permissions. It does not receive the user's Furniture Connect password.
Connecting ChatGPT
ChatGPT supports connections to custom MCP servers. Setup, available actions and administrator controls depend on the plan and workspace policies.[4]
ChatGPT won't necessarily ask for confirmation before every change. Approval behavior depends on the tool, its annotations, the user's permissions and the client context. Furniture Connect also has action-specific safeguards of its own.
The connection cannot repair the catalog underneath it
An assistant can only give a reliable answer when the necessary relationship exists in the data.
"Is the performance velvet available on the corner unit?" requires the valid combination to be represented, not hidden in a note saying "available in 40 fabrics."
"What is the depth?" requires the measurement, unit and relevant configuration.
"Show the oak version" requires an image assigned to that finish or variant.
If the answer is absent, the assistant should say so. It should not estimate the depth from a photograph or treat a general product image as proof of a colorway.
What Furniture Connect exposes through MCP
Furniture Connect publishes a remote MCP server for ChatGPT, Claude and compatible clients. Its live tool set covers products, variants, materials, finishes, catalog structure, imagery, workflows, quotes, presentations and other supported records. Access remains permission- and entitlement-dependent.[5]
The tools can support catalog and quote changes; they are not unrestricted access to every application setting. Saving generated imagery to a named variant requires the user's instruction. Larger creative batches and video generation have credit-approval safeguards in the Agent workflow. Live OrderWise actions remain user-triggered through the relevant quote-card controls.
The setup instructions are available from the Integrations area inside a Furniture Connect account. Whether the connection is included depends on your plan.
What to test before enabling write access
Choose five questions your sales or customer-service team answers every week. Try to answer them from the catalog alone, without opening a supplier PDF or messaging a colleague.
Then test one safe write task on a small product set. Check:
- Which records the assistant could see.
- Which fields it changed.
- Whether it stopped when a fact was missing.
- How the team reviewed or reversed the work.
MCP makes the catalog available in the conversation. The value comes from what that lets the team support: more accurate product answers, more complete ranges and more quotes built from the products the business actually sells.
